SPRINGFIELD SHOPPING AT A GLANCE:
MEIJER: It's still hard to top this mega-store for grocery deals; they generally keep their on-sale soft drinks at under $3.00 per 12-pack; chips and nuts come in better than anyone else's; best peanut butter specials of all stores; the ads are varied enough to cater to most tastes. Everything else leaves me cold; their electronics section is bland (lots of Sylvania and that gmf crap), their DVDs are an outrageous price, and the clothing is all cotton with too few sizes.
WAL-MART: Hell and gone at the back of Bechtle, but remains the best everyday deal for most stuff; butt-ugly clothing, but nice gardening section; the food side is monstrous (but not much on variety); sometimes VERY good sales on electronics; DVDs are nice (especially the "bone pit", where gems can be found depending on one's digging patience); censored music and zombie-esque help staff.
KROGER: Parking sucks, and their sales ads come out Sunday but start on Monday; really have to look hard for decent deals; solid meat department; lots of books and magazines to choose from; very nice cashiers and help staff.
K-MART: Why they're still out at the Mall is beyond me; torn-up parking lot, ratty racks of clothing; whole chunks of space stripped bare; housewares and tools might as well be ghost towns; electronics and movies are overpriced; one (1) register open at any given time; fabulous Christmas sales (but how many people must you kill for a shot at GUITAR HERO II?).
TARGET: Nice store, with different brands you don't see as often; clothing is bright and clean; big A-V media sections with good week-end deals; food departments are sparse, but decently priced; great toy aisles; THE hottest female cashiers on the planet (every other one is supermodel material).
BEST BUY: Despite being staffed by insolent 10th-graders, it's THE place to go for anything electronic (slightly-higher prices, but better selection); DVD Central, bar none (conforms nicely with my $10.00 Disc Rule); excellent TV offers; mediocre computers (and even-lousier Geek Squad); dulls the senses upon walking in, but worth the trip.
RITE-AID: Only good for candy bars, blank videotapes, and nut snacks; forget everything else (they'll put food on sale, but it'll only be one (1) wide and four (4) deep on the shelf; prescription costs are decent, but they're fairly slow in getting them filled for you.
ELDER-BEERMAN: Part of the Mall's Old Guard; stunning sales, but scant on inventory (you'd better be first when the gates open, and take a running dive at whatever it is you've found); snooty sales clerks, but at least they leave you alone when you want left alone; a last resort if you've tried everywhere else.
SEARS: Never anything good in there (their clothing is all heavyweight cotton with too many dark blues and greens); spring sales on winter coats are worthwhile; lots of power tools and jewelry; their "specials" leave much to be desired.
JC PENNY'S: Mainly for the wealthier set; shockingly high on most everything; clean and comfortable, though (has that upper-crust smell about it); wicked-rippin' Christmas and after-Christmas discounts (upwards of 70%, in some cases); the occasional cute muffin at the register.
Well, there you have it. I'll get to the eateries later on.....
